Voice of East African Women is seeking full-time Advocates for our second and third shift  in our soon to be opening shelter as well as in the community. This position supports a safe welcoming environment in the shelter and provides direct advocacy services to the women and children living in our shelter and in the community. The advocate will provide case management services and ensuring that families that we serve receive quality, comprehensive services and supportive care. Responsibilities include:

  • Individualized case management services for families in the shelter
  • Emotional support and promoting healing for families
  • Connecting residents to resources
  • Crisis support services
  • Security maintenance for families
  • Provision of comprehensive activities and groups to support resident goals
  • Networking with other providers
  • Maintain support plans for families
  • Track client data and submit reports


-Two years of college in social work or a related field

-       - Fluent in Somali and English required. Fluency in additional East African (Swahili, Oromo, Arabic) language preferred.

-       - Effective verbal and written communications skills

-        -Knowledge of dynamics of family violence, sexual exploitation or trauma and experience working in the field

-        -Ability to engage diverse women and children in activities that foster goal attainment

-        -Ability to implement interventions with families where there is complex trauma

-        -Skills in providing emotional support

-        -Knowledge of potential barriers facing people of color, low income and immigrants

-        -Experience in working in collaboration with and knowledge of other social and community service providers

-        -Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

-        -Ability to manage time effectively and several task simultaneously, prioritize and meet deadlines
